Blog Tag - What I do when I’m Not Working

A few days ago I was blog tagged by Steven Bradley who was tagged by Yuri Filimonov who was tagged by Elizabeth Able who was tagged by Kim Krause Berg who was tagged by Barry Schwartz who was tagged by Shimon Sandler who started the whole thing.

The theme of this game of blog tag started as “What I do when I’m not doing SEO”, but Steven broadened it to what I’m doing when I’m not working since he’s not primarily an SEO. Which is good because neither am I.

One thing I do when I’m not working is cook, which I noticed several other of the “tagged ones” also enjoy. My Specialty is barbecued ribs. I also enjoy woodworking in my garage shop - where I designed and built this cherry sleigh bed as a Christmas present for my lovely (sleeping) wife a couple of years ago.

Notice the hand carved volutes and MetaToast Central glowing in the corner.

I’m also interested in astronomy, and occasionally stay up until crazy hours freezing my butt off while looking through my telescope, and contemplating the infinite – mostly just freezing my butt off. I took this really easy picture of the moon with a Minolta digital camera through my 6” Meade refractor:

Moon - third quarter
Pretty cool eh? (I know - I’m such a nerd)

I’ve always read profusely about just about any subject, but for pure enjoyment I favor science fiction / fantasy. I used to make home brewed beer, but lately I mostly just drink beer. I’ve also made some really horrible wine (a five gallon bottle of which is aging in my wife’s closet – she’s really tolerant of me like that) and some fairly decent hard (really hard) cider. BTW the horrid wine is made from grapes that I grow out back.

OK, enough about me. I tag:

  1. Astronomy. That’s one I missed. I don’t have a telescope, but I do like staying up late to catch some celestial event.

Back in August a friend and myself went out to an empty field to catch the meteor showers. We caught a couple of foxes running off as we pulled the car up and then she and I tried to find a good place to lay back and enjoy the stars.

You don’t really need a telescope, you can see some pretty cool stuff (moons of Jupiter, Orion Nebula, Beehive star cluster - to name a few) through a $25 pair of binoculars - if you know where to look. Swapping trivia with another interested party while enjoying a clear sky is the essence of it.

    Thanks for the comment.

  3. True about the telescope. I have seen some cool things without one. I can usually pick out the planets in the night sky and always have fun looking at constellations.

Boulder isn’t too bad on the light in general so you see a lot of stars, but there are times when I’ll be in the mountains at a friends cabin and you get so little light that you feel like you’re seeing every star in the universe.

I love it when there are so many stars visible that I can’t pick out a single constellation.

Unfortunately, places like that are getting harder to find, because of skyglow/light pollution caused by urban sprawl and streetlights.

  5. They are disappearing, but there are still some spots around if you know where to look and you happen to live in the right location.
