Why Do So Many People Blog about Blogging?
Why do so many people blog about blogging? Anyone who plays in this highly competitive space probably has their own reasons, but there is one very good reason to write about any aspect of webmastering or website development - metablogging speaks directly to the people who create links on the internet. Even if you only reach a few people with your metablog, they will almost all be people who already have a website or are thinking about building one - the linkerati. If you are reading this then you’re probably one of these people, and we all need each other to achieve our goals of high rankings and world domination. So, participate, comment, get to know your fellow bloggers and webmasters.
Another reason to blog about website development is that because of the following reasons metablogging is a growth industry with an ever-growing number of potential customers - readers like you.
- New people worldwide are constantly obtaining Internet access or faster Internet access - directly growing the audience for new media.
- Everyone would like to make some money on the Internet - preferably a lot of easy money. And a few bloggers seem to have done exactly that.
- Being a self employed, self-sufficient blogger - working from your laptop at poolside or in a coffee shop sounds pretty sweet - even if it’s largely a fantasy.
- The technical aspects of blogging have gotten much easier, and will almost certainly get even easier.
- The population as a whole is becoming more Internet/technically proficient.
- All it takes to get started in blogging is access to the Internet and desire. You don’t even have to own a computer, all of the software that you need is available for free online, and you don’t even have to pay for hosting or a domain name.
- No bosses, no customers, no employees, no alarm clocks.
- Because of the many aspects of blogging (copy writing, SEO, monetization, marketing, etc.) there is no end of subject matter to write about.
- It’s probably easier to build links - and thus pagerank - with a metablog than any other subject matter, because all of the readers are linkerati.
- Once you’ve built up a bit of link juice you can carefully direct some of it to help other sites in more difficult niches - very useful for any kind of web developer.
- The list goes on and on.
The result is that as more people learn about blogging, more people want to do it - especially the easy money part of it. With this ever growing audience to tap into, metabloggers (those who blog about blogging) are just making a business decision- BTW, most metabloggers have other Internet properties that they also work and make money on.
Reputation management is yet another reason to blog. If your name is prominent on your blog it’s likely that your blog will dominate several pages of the serps for a query on your name. That way it will be less likely that a casual search will turn up your ex’s rant on MySpace or those pictures from that spring break back in college.
Of course the down side of metablogging is that the competition is fierce, and at first glance it would appear that the existing authorities have a stranglehold on a saturated market. However, after observing the industry for a while you will notice that there is a steady stream of A-list metabloggers who move on to something else - leaving room for you and me.
It’s a big world and there is always opportunity for a determined person.

[…] However, I bet that in three to five years there will be a new crop of A-list metabloggers that will all have one thing in common – they started their blog in 2008 despite the high probability of failure. Beside which, there are some pretty good reasons why starting a metablog might be a good idea. […]
